Give the Gift of History

Monday, December 12, 2016

When John Berendt wrote "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," he probably never dreamed that the novel would stay on the New York Times best seller list for nearly one year. He probably also never thought that his story would be made into a major motion picture starring Kevin Spacey and Jude Law. When visiting Savannah, Georgia, guests also have the chance to visit the destinations and learn about the people involved in the tragic true story.

The Book

The "Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil" tour brings fans of John Berendt's book the chance to separate fact from fiction. Countless novels and movies are based on true stories. However, what readers and viewers may not realize is that the truth is often intermingled with fiction. Many of the characters in the book and movie are based on actual citizens of Savannah, Georgia. Jim Williams was a gay, successful and affluent antique dealer and preservationist who owned and renovated more than 60 homes in the city. Williams' lover Danny Hansford was also a real person. The greed, deception, jealousy and subsequent murder did take place. In fact, Williams was brought to trial four times for the murder of Hansford, spanning from 1982 to 1989.

Take The Tour

The historic tour given by Savannah Heritage Tours takes guests to the many locations discussed in the book, which includes Williams' homes and the Bonaventure Cemetery. During the 2.5 or 3-hour journey, many of the unique characters are brought to life. Visitors gain insight into the transgendered club entertainer known as Minerva. Discover that Lady Chablis was an accomplished actress and author though never having finished school. Joe Odom was also an actual resident of the fair city. See the "Bird Girl" sculpture and hear about the dark side of the lives of the wealthy and the voodoo culture that often is associated with southern history.

The vast expanse of the Bonaventure Cemetery in and of itself holds many interesting stories. Along with the chance to visit the many locations discussed in the novel or seen in the movie, guests are made privy to many fascinating facts about the destination. Learn the meaning behind the symbols often engraved on headstones. Hear the historic, remarkable and sometimes tragic events of the people buried there.

Here at the tour you can make memories with your friends and family before or after the Holiday's.

The Real Story

Dep Kirkland was an attorney and Chief Assistant DA when the crime occurred. He was one of the first people on the scene during the murder investigation. After continual prodding and encouragement, Mr. Kirkland authored "Lawyer Games: After Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." The novel brings to light little known facts about the investigation and the deep-seated greed that led to the corruption during the trials. Make a point of reading the book before or after taking the tour to get the a more complete picture of what actually transpired.
